Treatment
About the rTMS treatment
- The treatment is made up of 20 sessions lasting an hour each in a comfortable environment with friendly staff.
- rTMS uses repetitive trains of magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the brain.
- This innovative technology has been researched by experts for over two decades.
- It is ideal for patients who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant treatment.
- It is non-systemic (does not circulate in the bloodstream throughout the body)
- It is non-invasive - there is no surgery, anesthesia or sedation required.
- Pulsed, biologically safe magnetic fields are repetitively directed to the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain that is thought to regulate mood, in order to stimulate the firing of neurons (nerve cells).
- This triggers a series of neurochemical events, including the release of neurotransmitters (such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine) and helps to normalize neurotransmitter function.
- At Smart Brain and Health, the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) may be used to more accurately target the relevant areas of the brain.
